Powell River is a Natural beauty with an abundance of lakes and hiking trails tucked away in the forest. The Mud Lake loop trails behind Duck Lake includes Blackwater Creek Trail, Sweet Water Creek trail & Suicide Creek trail. The prettiest trail is the Lang Creek trail. The trail is about five kilometres and takes a few hours to complete. The trail is highlighted by waterfalls and leads to the Lang Creek salmon hatchery on highway 101. The best known Inland Lake trail is a 13 kilometre hike around the entire lake. It is the first fully wheelchair accessible trail in British Columbia. Inland Lake is open for camping, biking & canoeing from mid April to mid October. Hike the Sunshine Coast Trail. This trail provides 180 km of hiking that can be done in 5 smaller sections. Historic Willingdon Beach trail located in town and is 1.2 km long. It is bike and wheelchair accessible. Take a scenic walk through the lush forest trail and enjoy the outdoor museum. Walkers pass by permanent displays of old forestry equipment and are kept informed by small signs posted along the way. Visit the Forestry Museum located at the South end of Willingdon Beach. The museum is open in the afternoon's from late June to Labour day. Admission is by donation. Valentine Mountain, located in Cranberry, provides a vista of Powell Lake, Powell River and the straight of Georgia. The 260 meter summit, a 20 minute hike for the average person, is accessible by 90 steps cut into the side of the mountain. Picnic tables are located at the summit so bring a lunch and enjoy the views of the mountains and inlets below.
Outdoor recreational activities galore. Sea Kayaking, scuba diving, canoeing, windsurfing, golfing, camping, sight seeing and fishing charters to name a few. Visitors will find plenty to explore! We are renowned for scuba diving with many sites to explore. Divers can visit the finest underwater bronze mermaid poised in 20 meters of water at Saltrey Bay provincial park.
The coastal town is always busy with activities during summer months. Powell River hosts one of the worlds largest biannual choral festival Kathaumiixw with choirs competing from all over the world. The next festival is scheduled for July of 2008. Annual Sea Fair Festival is in mid July and the Black Berry festival and street party is August 2008. Open Air Market The open air market runs from May till the first week of October every Saturday 10:30 - 12:30 and Sundays from 12:30 - 2:30. Music, food local produce, crafts, pony rides and more. View the hulks from the Townsite view point and the Catalyst Paper Corporation Powell River Division's specialty paper mill -'The world prints on us'. While in historic Townsite visit the Patricia Theatre the oldest continuously operating theatre in Canada since 1928. Movies are only $4.50 every Monday.
Take a 45 minute scenic drive to the end of the 101 highway and community of Lund, B.C. Walk the boardwalk, visit the shops or take a day cruise to Desolation Sound. Okeover Arm is a great place to get oysters off the beach. You must have a fishing license. Board a water taxi (15 minutes) to Savary Island. Fish Hatcheries View salmon spawning, mid September at the Lang Creek Fish Hatchery on Highway 101 south of Powell River. The Sliammon Creek Hatchery located 101 north of Powell River. You can look through a window into Sliammon Creek with a clear view of salmon swimming and spawning in the creek. The entire complex is wheel chair accessible. For tours call 604 483-4111.
